{"id":1126,"date":"2012-10-01T20:37:27","date_gmt":"2012-10-01T19:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stevenwhiting.com\/blog\/?p=1126"},"modified":"2012-10-29T19:05:58","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T19:05:58","slug":"youtube-e-mails-freezing-outlook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevenwhiting.com\/blog\/?p=1126","title":{"rendered":"YouTube E-mails freezing Outlook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 This is now fixed as YouTube have added the http:\/\/ to the SRC addresses now to stop Outlook thinking it&#8217;s a network path.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you attempt to open and e-mail from YouTube recently in Outlook you&#8217;ll probably get what seems to be a lock-up and sometimes a complete Outlook crash.\u00a0 Most of the time it&#8217;s just timing out.\u00a0 Why is this happening?\u00a0 With the help of Process Monitor and some pointers from Mark Russinovich from Microsoft and creator of the great series of talks <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/bb963887.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The Case Of The Unexplained<\/a> it appears to be the way Outlook handles &#8220;\/\/&#8221; tags.<\/p>\n<p>While opening the e-mail Outlook, after a while frozen, would pop up the below message.\u00a0 Why was it trying to look at a network address \\\\ when ytimg.com is clearly a http address.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Issue1\" src=\"http:\/\/imageshack.us\/a\/img542\/6286\/96569709.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Running <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/bb896645.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Process Monitor<\/a> and putting some filters on it&#8217;s capture I found this:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Issue2\" src=\"http:\/\/imageshack.us\/a\/img513\/9968\/28928432.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1247\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see Outlook is trying to look for a file at \\\\i3.ytimg.com\\i\\ and not finding it so timing out.\u00a0\u00a0 Sending the findings to Mark Russinovich for his Case Of The Unexplained talks he replied, after I sent a copy of the e-mail so he was able to recreate it, that it&#8217;s the table in the e-mail that is trying to load the avatar&#8217;s people use:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&lt;tr&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;td bgcolor=&#8221;#FFF&#8221; align=&#8221;left&#8221; width=&#8221;50&#8243;&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;img src=&#8221;\/\/i3.ytimg.com\/i\/ZfOE9SPvPjlslcDGePkIiQ\/1.jpg?<\/p>\n<p>v=4fc532bd&#8221; height=&#8221;50&#8243; width=&#8221;50&#8243;&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;\/td&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;td width=&#8221;16&#8243;&gt;&lt;\/td&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Turns out Outlook is interpreting the &#8220;\/\/&#8221;
